What is Alopecia?
Alopecia is a type of medical condition that makes a person hair to fall out. The cause of this condition is still unknown but most people who have this condition have a family history of alopecia. The disease is thought to be an autoimmune condition and it occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys body tissues. The disease attacks children, men and women. When the condition attacks a person his or her hair starts to fall out in clumps. But, the extent of the hair loss is not the same it varies in some people. It can occur in a few spots while in other people the hair loss can be greater. The person can also lose the hair on his or her head or the whole body but this only happens on rare occasions. Alopecia is an unpredictable condition. In most people, the hair grows back and falls out again later. But, in others the hair grows back and it will remain. Every case is unique in its own way. Even if the person is going to lose all of his hair, there is a good chance that it is going to grow back.
Who can get Alopecia?
Anybody can get this condition but chances of getting alopecia are high especially if you have somebody within the family who has ever suffered the disease. The condition mostly occurs within people who have family members that have autoimmune disorders like thyroid disease, diabetes and lupus.
Symptoms of Alopecia
The main symptom of this condition is loss of hair in small patches on the scalp. But, there are other diseases that can cause hair to fall out in the same way. The patches develop very quickly. The first person who can identify bald patches quickly can either be a hairdresser or a close relative. Aside from the bald patches, the scalp will appear healthy and there will be no scarring. But, the person will experience mild scaling, mild redness and mild burning on the bald patches. When a bald patch develops it is hard to know how it is going to progress.
Treatment of Alopecia
There is no cure for alopecia but you can be able to stop the loss of hair and even grow it back naturally or with the help of medication. But, it is vital to know that there are no drugs which have been approved in treating alopecia. There are treatments which can stimulate hair growth but there is none which can prevent hair loss or curing the condition. There are drugs like minoxidil which can be applied into the scalp in order to stimulate hair growth.
